Unanimous Vote to Investigate the formation of a Garff Local Authority
Members of the public have voted unanimously for Maughold Commissioners to take part in investigations with Laxey and Lonan into the formation of a single local authority to administer services across the whole sheading. The general principles and issues relative to the proposed amalgamation of the three authorities were discussed at the meeting. The Commissioners committed to report back to Maughold residents once full details of the effect on rates and service delivery had been established.
Central government has made it clear that it wishes to transfer several services from taxation onto the rates. The three Garff authorities consider that amalgamation into a single authority will provide an authority with the ability to take on the delivery of additional responsibilites without losing local accountability or quality of service. The Commissioners will keep residents updated on the progress of the discussions. Please contact the Commissioners' clerk for further details on 422148 or via maughold@manx.net.
Commissioners Pressure Government Over Glen Mona Bus Shelter
The decision to remove the bus shelter on the north bound A2 in Glen Mona has been robustly questioned by the Commissioners.
The primary concern is for the safety of schoolchildren who may seek shelter at the stop across the road in bad weather; necessitating the crossing of a busy road at peak traffic times.
No notice or announcement was made by Bus Vannin or the Department of Infrastructure prior to the removal. The Commissioners have received written assurance that an alternative site is being planned in the immediate vicinity from the Department of Infrastructure.
The Commissioners will maintain pressure on government until that outcome is achieved.
