Maughold Residents Informed of Possible Changes to Local Government Structure.
Maughold
Parish Commissioners held two well attended public meetings in the Parish at the end of
September for the purpose of raising awareness about the recent Consultation on
the Scope of Government which proposes the re-organisation of local
authorities and the transfer of
services from central taxation and onto the rates.
The
Chairman, Robert Moughtin, informed the meetings about the services currently
delivered by the Commissioners. He explained
how these functions were already delivered efficiently and cost effectively by
the Commissioners. Contributions from the floor indicated that those ratepayers
present were very happy with the quality and efficiency of these services. Attention
was also drawn to the Garff Initiative through which the three local
authorities of Laxey, Lonan and Maughold, work together to provide joint
services. The meeting was advised that the sharing of further services was
currently under investigation.
A
motion from the floor proposed that any merger of the northern authorities with
Ramsey should be opposed. A vote indicated unanimous support for this motion.
The public were urged to contact their MHK,
the Chief Minister to relate their views on any changes to the local government
structure.
