Commissioners respond to Refuse Collection Consultation
The Commissioners have forwarded their views on the consultation in regard to the Island's refuse collection. The thrust of the report guides the reader to options for either an 'all-island collection service or one based on the four plus one model. It is the view of the Commissioners that their current arrangement for refuse collection is efficient and very cost effective. Maughold are members of the Garff Initiative with Laxey and Lonan. The Commissioners have close control over the quality of service and cost of the service which is provided by a contractor. The fear is that the government's proposals will introduce a model of service delivery that will distance ratepayers from those providing the service; with a corresponding lack of accountability for the quality and cost of that service. The theoretical models suggested by government are likely to create a 'monopoly' situation in which only one contractor would have the resources to deliver refuse collection across the Island. It is the view of the Commissioners that this would not provide a competitive situation in which the most cost efficient service could be chosen.
