Review of Domestic Rating
A consultation on the domestic rating system is now underway. Currently properties are rated through a method which assesses them against their rental value in 1969: a system which is considered outdated and iniquitous by many.
Through the consultation Government are proposing several options including a system in which all properties are rated against their capital rather than rental value.
The impact of changes to the rating system will become more evident as further services are transferred from government to local authorities.
It is likely that there will be 'winners' and 'losers' as a result of a new system being implemented, so the Commissioners encourage residents to consider the matter carefully and submit their views to Government. The consultation can be accessed
here and closes on April the 27th 2015.
Temporary 30 mph speed limit - A2 Between Hibernia and Margher e Kew
There will be a temporary 30 mph speed limit on a short section of the A2 Coast Road south of the Hibernia Junction. The restriction will be in force from 6.00am on 13th April 2015 until 6.00pm on the 24th of April, or until the drainage work being undertaken is completed.
Commissioners to Share Office Facilities with Laxey & Lonan
The Commissioners will begin operating from new offices at 35 New Road, Laxey during April. The office will move from St Maughold's Church Room to premises in Laxey from which both Laxey and Lonan Commissioners already operate.
The consolidation of office facilities by the three Garff authorities will assist in the management of services such as refuse collection which are already delivered jointly, and will also assist delivery of the new services being transferred from government such as hedge cutting, road sweeping, and gulley cleaning.
Contact numbers and e-mail addresses will remain the same.
The three clerks already liaise very closely and it is intended that the move into 35 New Road will allow relationships between the three authorities to be developed even further; whether that be through joint working or actual amalgamation into a single Garff Authority. The latter is an option that is currently being planned. Once proposals have been prepared they will be put to ratepayers for consideration.
