Commissioners set rate for YE 2014 in light of transfer of Tipping charge onto ratepayers
The rate for YE 2014 has been set at 96p in the £ with a separate property charge of £83.18. The 65% rise in tipping charges has caused the Commission to re-examine the separate property charge. The separate charge of £83.18 now covers the total cost of tipping at the Energy from Waste plant and the operational costs of the Civic Amenity site which are also rising markedly due to the increase in disposal charges. A further consequence is that the previous rate of 108p in the £ has been reduced by 12p to 96p in the £. The overall effect on the total Commissioners rate charges will mean that an average property will be paying approximately £25 more than this year.
The separation of refuse disposal and Civic Amenity Site costs from the general rate will allow ratepayers to keep a check on how much these services are costing. It is important to note that these costs can be reduced if more is recycled. In this respect, the Commissioners encourage all residents to recycle glass, paper and steel/aluminium tins at the bring banks; plastic can also be recycled at the Civic Amenity Site - see Recycling and Refuse page for further details.
Regional Sewage Treatment Strategy - Update
The Commissioners have received communication from Mr Brian Barnett which provides an update on the proposed improvements to the sewage facilities in Maughold Village, at Port Mooar, and at Port Lewaigue. Mr Barnett advises that a decision has been made to install a new IRBC sewage treatment plant at Port Mooar to serve Booilushag and Maughold Village. Sewage from the village will be conveyed to Port Mooar via a new gravity sewer. Some preparatory ground clearance has taken place at Port Lewaigue where a new IRBC will also be installed. It is anticipated that the works at Maughold on the new sewer will begin in July/August 2013, whilst the works at Port Mooar will begin in September 2013. It is hoped that these facilities will be operational in the first few months of 2014. Due to the bird breeding season works are expected to commence at Port Lewaigue in September and completed by December 2013. The Water and Sewerage Authority have committed to communicate frequently with residents throughout these periods.
Garff Chairmen meet with Boundary Review Committee
The chairmen of the three Garff local authorities, Laxey, Lonan and Maughold met with the Boundary Review Committee on Monday the 4th of February. The proposals made in a report by the Committee were discussed. The three chairmen made clear their view that Maughold would be better placed in the proposed East constituency, rather than in the North constituency as indicated in their report. Mr Rodan SHK was also present at the meeting. The Committee agreed to consider the points made by the Garff representatives at the meeting. The closing date for public comments to be made to the Boundary Review Committee is the 20th of February. Further details can be found by clicking
