Mini Recycling Centre Update - One week in!
The Commissioners are very pleased to see that the new mini-recycling-centre has being well used in the first week of its trial. They very much encourage every resident of the Corony area to make good use of it. Keeping all glass, steel/aluminium cans and paper/light card out of the Parish's wheelie bins is a top priority now that the government tipping charges have been tripled.
Commissioners Press on Traffic Issues
Following expressions of concern from residents, the Commissioners are currently preparing a report on several traffic issues for the April meeting of the Northern Traffic Management Liaison Group. These include options for calming traffic as it passes through Glen Mona and the condition of several minor roads in the Parish. Please forward any comments to the clerk at the Commissioners' Office as soon as possible.
Shennaghys Jiu: Commissioners Wish Dhoon Children A Good Festival!
Following on from the success of the Daffodil Competition, the Commissioners would like to send their very best wishes to the school children taking part in this year's Shennaghys Jiu festival; which is focused on providing opportunities for young people to perform traditional music. The Dhoon Children will take part in the family concert at Ree Gorree on Good Friday evening (7.30pm): why not go along and support them! They will also be taking part in a music workshop on Easter Saturday in Ramsey Town Hall at 11.00 am. Musicians from many corners of the Celtic World will be in school to engage with the children this Thursday. There is much much more going on which young and old alike can get involved in. Dhoon School Daffodil Winners!
The children of the Dhoon School responded magnificently to the recently judged Daffodil Competition organised as a joint venture by the School and the Commissioners. The number
and quality of daffodils was superb.
Prizes were awarded in two categories, 'Best Daffodil' and 'Best Decorated Pot' in both Infant and Junior Sections. Judging was undertaken by Mrs Quellin of Dreemskerry and Mrs Jordan of Ballasholague. Congratulations to the winners: Fflur, Sarah, Chloe, Patrick, Holly, James, Isabella, Neil, Ella, Sophie, Philip, and Maddie! These all received large chocolate eggs from Mrs Hazel Lace CP, Chairman of Maughold Parish Commissioners, Mrs Jordan and Mrs Quellin. All the schoolchildren received a creme egg for producing such an excellent display! The competition will run again in the autumn when the Commissioners will assist the children in potting their bulbs.
Trams Services recommence on March 20th.
Mini Recycling Centre - First For Maughold!
The children of the Corony have given an enthusiastic welcome to the recently installed Mini-Recycling-Centre on their estate.
The first facility of this type on the Island.
The centre, installed by the Commissioners in partnership with the DLGE, provides a convenient point for residents to recycle glass, paper, light card, and steel & aluminium cans, etc.
The Commissioners will supply a robust bag to residents of the Corony/Cronk Cardle to assist with collecting and transferring recyclables to the facility.
With tripling domestic waste charges being applied by government from April now is the time to ensure all glass, paper and metal cans are kept out of the wheelie bins. This will help to keep the rates down.
Contact the clerk on 422148 for further information on recycling, and assistance with other green initiatives such as Home Composting (see our Recycling & Refuse page).
Minutes of the March Meeting of the Commissioners
are now published on the Minutes Page.
How is Your Glass Recycled on the Island?
Home Composting is a Crucial Factor...
in helping us to keep the rates as low as possible. The waste evaluations of our wheelie bin contents undertaken by the DLGE in recent years suggest that many items appearing in our wheelie bins could be composted and reused in our gardens and vegetable patches.
The Commissioners are aware that more is composted in Maughold than in other areas, but would encourage everyone to become involved and set up a compost bin in their garden.
We are very fortunate in Maughold to have a Master Composter who is available to provide advice on setting up your composting bin. Please contact the clerk for further details.
10:10 Encouraging You to Reduce Your CO2 Emissions!
The Commissioners encourage all residents to join in the Friends of the Earth Campaign aimed at reducing CO2 emissions.
Individuals, families and businesses can easily get involved.
With Rising Waste Charges Now's the Time....
To Compost and Recycle!
With rising waste disposal charges impacting on the rates the Commissioners thank all residents who recycle at our Bring Banks and now urge everyone to do all they can to keep glass, paper, light card (cereal packets, etc), and steel/aluminium cans out of the wheelie bins.
In the next weeks a trial Mini Recycling Centre will be installed at the Corony as a joint initiative by the Commissioners and the DLGE. It is hoped that these types of bring bank will provide a more convenient option for residents of the area.
The Commissioners will monitor the operation of the centre, but in conjunction with the DLGE will assess the viability of other such facilities in the Parish as the year progresses.
Our recycling Bring Banks are located at Dhoon, Glen Mona, and Maughold Village. Dry cell and vehicle batteries can be recycled via Glen Mona Stores.
A significant help in reducing the weight of the wheelie bins would be the adoption by even more residents of composting. We are fortunate to have a Master Composter in our midst and encourage residents to request his advice in setting up a facility in their garden - contact the clerk in the first instance. In response to the many requests from residents, the Commissioners would also like to see recycling streams established for items such as plastic bottles and heavy card; they will continue to negotiate with government in this regard in the coming months.
